(Hi)story of Expediciones

Once upon a time Expediciones began ... Born in 1978 from the alliance of two brothers (Julio ALCUBILLA and Carlos ALCUBILLA) impassionated by mountains.

Attracted by the majestic landscapes for excursions and trekking, they arrived by chance in Sierra de Guara with a few guides and friends coming from the other side of the Pyrenees and discovered that this zone has much more to offer... the canyons.

The canyoning such as it is known today was in its beginnings and was practised only by a limited circle of speleologists and other mountain dwellers curious and adventurous. The equipment was rudimentary and descend of canyons were done in bathing suit, only equipped with cords and cross-belts for the abseils (Rio Vero, Peonera, Gorgas Negras, Mascun Superior, Oscuros of Balces). It was cold, but facing such spectacle in the canyons with cascades, crystalline water in natural pools, chaos and cliffs, they decided that they could not keep this for themselves and that everyone should enjoy it. So they created the first organized tours Canyons in Sierra de Guara. Until the beginning of the Nineties (with the democratization of this extreme activity), they were mostly French people coming. Then, Spanish people and other Europeans began to discover Sierra de Guara.

The project decided, a name was missing for the company and guide's office in Sierra de Guara... Considering the isolation of Sierra de Guara at this time (track instead of road, no phone), the camps having to be created each time out of nothing (no accomodation existing in order to receive the participants, nor hotel, nor campsite), the difficult access to the canyons where it was often necessary to open paths with a machete (accesses still used today), each stay, then lasting 3/4 weeks, requiring a big logistic effort and having to be organized like a true expedition in a "hostile" environment; the name thus came from itself: EXPEDICIONES
