ALQUEZAR

Alquézar, from the Arabic Al-Qasr meaning “The Castle” (also called Alquezra in Aragonese). This village is a municipality of the Somontano de Barbastro region, in the Province of Huesca, Autonomous Community of Aragon, Spain.

From its eagle’s nest perched above the Vero River Canyon, Alquézar offers spectacular views of a wild and beautiful landscapes. They are partst of the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Natural Park (eastern area) and the Río Vero Cultural Park; a stunning landscape that provides numerous options for culture and nature lovers.

Alquézar offers numerous tourist services. You can find accommodations, restaurants, bars, mini-supermarkets, a gas station, craft shops, and interesting sights and monuments:

A bit of history about Alquézar…

Alquézar offers its visitors unique Mediterranean landscapes shaped by erosion and the constant interplay between water and rock.

Declared Historic Artistic Heritage, the village of Alquézar invites you to step back in time through a relaxing promenade along narrow streets of cobblestones and most emblematic corners. This town transports us back to both the medieval past and prehistoric times. Indeed there is numerous cave paintings that can be visited near the town and the Vero River.

After passing through the Gothic gateway to the town, its streets reveal tightly packed houses, brick archways, raised walkways, stone and brick doorways, and coats of arms sculpted in stone. The Plaza Vieja (Old Square) is home to one of the best-preserved examples of our traditional architecture.

At the top of the hill stands the castle of Muslim origin that gave the town its name. To house the religious community that settled there after its conquest from the Moors, a Romanesque temple was built, of which only the atrium remains, decorated with historiated capitals. In the first half of the 16th century, the current Collegiate Church of Santa María was built, and in the 17th century, the parish church of San Miguel.

In 2022, the UNWTO (UN Tourism) has included has included Alquezar village in the list of 32 Best Tourism Villages. The list recognises villages which are excellent references of rural tourism with accredited cultural and natural assets, that preserve and promote rural and community-based values, products, and lifestyle. Included destinations must have a clear commitment to innovation and sustainability in all its aspects – economic, social and environmental
