Bierge - Expediciones

The village of Bierge (Biarche or Bierxe in Aragonese) is a municipality in the Somontano de Barbastro region of the Province of Huesca, located south of the Sierra de Guara mountain range. It is the westernmost municipality in the region, bordering the Hoya de Huesca to the west, the Alto Gállego to the north, and the Sobrarbe to the east.

Situated at an altitude of 602 meters near the confluence of the Alcanadre and Isuala rivers, about 40 kilometers from Huesca, and with a population of approximately 150, Bierge was established on a hill known as Monte Cascallo. Legend has it that a castle and a church once stood there, from which the village developed during the medieval period.

The village offers numerous tourist services, including accommodations and hotels, restaurants, bars, mini-supermarkets, and interesting sights and monuments.

A bit of history about Bierge…

In this Mediterranean landscape dominated by olive and almond groves, Bierge has undergone numerous transformations throughout its history. In the 16th century, as a consequence of the growth of economic activity, where livestock and agriculture were the main sources of sustenance (especially olive oil, cereals, and wine), and the deep religiosity of the time, a good number of churches in the Somontano region were built, and many others were renovated. The church of Bierge is a fine example of this late Gothic architecture. Dedicated to Saint James, it is a 16th-century renovation of an older church. The Renaissance-style portal and the brick archway are unmistakable chronological markers. Its main feature is its exterior sobriety, softened only by the beautiful rose window, the Renaissance portal, and the rhythmic interplay of open and closed spaces, of light and shadow, created by the archway above it.

Over time, the hamlet spread across the hillside and the plain. Many of the houses bear heraldic shields that speak to the aristocratic fervor that swept through the area in the 18th century. These shields are often located above beautiful doorways with semicircular arches, constructed with sizable voussoirs, perfectly carved and fitted into ” la rosca del arco”..
